Woes on Wall Street coincide with gold coin rush - AP

Investors who have forsaken shaky financial markets for the safety of gold must feel a little bit like prospectors.

As the worst recession in at least a generation spreads, so too does the clamor for gold bars and coins, assets less likely to go up on smoke like so many derivatives and asset-backed securities. “I’ve never seen a case where demand was so high and supply was so short,” said Chicago coin dealer Harlan Berk, who has been in the business 44 years.

Change Comes to Gold Coinage 1834-1837 - NumisMaster

As collectors we look on the early gold coinage and perhaps wonder what people who lived in the 1790s and early 1800s thought of such coins. US Eagle Gold Proof Four-Coin Set Sold Out - Coin News

Choosing which 2008 American Eagle Gold Proof coin to buy is becoming easier every day. The US Mint’s one ounce option sold out late this week, and the four-coin set just joined it.

While the Mint recently slashed gold and platinum coins — more than 20 — from its 2009 numismatic portfolio, all American Eagle gold proof options will return. For the eagle uncirculated coins, however, only the one ounce will see light in 2009. It is no wonder that the uncirculated gold series is currently experiencing the highest demand. Yet, all these coins may still be purchased.
