Disabled Vets commemorative coin law praised in Congress - Coin News

President Bush made the American Veterans Disabled for Life Commemorative Coin Act law with his signature last week. With that, a small mention of its passage in the mainstream media would be expected. But not so. Articles are sparse.

The new law (Public Law No: 110-277) will have the U.S. Mint issue up to 350,000 silver dollar coins in 2010 commemorating disabled American Veterans. $10 surcharges for each coin are to help build an American Veterans’ Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.

NASA coin bill passed House twice - CoinNews

The House of Representatives passed commemorative coin legislation Tuesday that would issue silver and gold coins honoring NASA’s 50th anniversary this year. The legislation, H.R. 6455, was introduced and passed swiftly in five days.

Praiseworthy speed? Perhaps not… Consider first that H.R. 6455 is nearly identical to H.R. 2750, which the House had already passed in 2007. And for all practical purposes, it’s identical to the Senate’s June passage of S. 2159.

More Advice on Coin Cleaning - NumisMaster

In my last column, I talked about coin cleaning with abrasive methods, which should almost never be employed, and with coin dips. If you follow the directions on the container, the acid-thiourea dip method will produce satisfactory results on high-grade coins, as long as you don’t do it repeatedly on the same coin and you take care to neutralize the action of the solution.

I should note that you should never use this method on a copper/bronze coin, as the coin will turn a pink color that gives it a decidedly cleaned appearance.

Turkmenistan Currency Gains Popularity - NumisMaster

It’s no secret the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar has declined significantly on the world market in recent months. Alternative currencies such as the European Union’s euro and Japan’s yen are becoming increasingly popular to hold rather than dollars in many places, but not in the former Soviet socialist republic of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan is an unusual place. It is one of several despotic regimes that rose from the ashes of the Soviet Union during the 1990s. Inflation has been a watchword through two regimes.
