ANAThe American Numismatic Association urges its members to contact their members of Congress and ask to repeal a law that could significantly increase the paperwork burden on dealers and increase the risk of identity theft for all collectors who buy and sell numismatic material.

Under Section 9006 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as health care reform legislation, businesses will be required to report all goods and services purchased in excess of $600 with an IRS 1099 form.

As written, the law would, beginning in 2012, require all coin dealers to report on IRS form 1099 all goods and services (totaled across a taxable year) they purchase from other dealers and customers in excess of $600...

The newly released 2010 American Eagle Platinum proof coin went from its launch price of $1,892 to...

U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White said the five 2010 bullion coins, which will feature the same designs seen on each of the 2010 circulating quarters, will likely start getting pressed this fall.

Their premiums have not been revealed, although as bullion offerings they should be lower than typical numismatic coin premiums. The 5 ounce, .999 fine silver coins will have a huge diameter of 3 inches, which is nearly double that of the American Silver Eagle.

2010 American Eagle Gold Bullion CoinDemand for Bullion 2010 Gold American Eagles climbed in July over June, owing mostly to a renewed interest in the one ounce coins. Conversely, sales of the smaller or fractional gold coins dropped drastically.

The United States Mint experienced a rush of orders for the fractional Gold Eagles on June 10 when they were first released to its network of authorized purchasers. The recent hearing on "The State of U.S. Coins and Currency" by the House Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology yielded another interesting sub-topic aside from the increased chance for 2010 Silver Eagle proofs previously mentioned on CoinNews.

Steel Pennies

In fact, this topic proved to be a bit more contentious than the eagles as it invoked a miniature power struggle between the executive branch of the United States and Congress. At the heart of the matter is the makeup of American circulating coinage — its composition.

For sometime, Lincoln penny and Jefferson nickel production costs have been higher than their corresponding 1c and 5c face values. In Fiscal Year 2009, the US Mint estimated the cent cost $0.0162 to produce while the nickel...
