Royal Canadian Mint Issues 2008 Lucky Loonie - Coin News

With the Beijing Olympic Games and Beijing Paralympic Games just around the corner, the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to issue the 2008 Lucky Loonie, the latest in its extensive Olympic themed circulation coin program.

The one-dollar coin, which features the familiar loon landing in water and the official emblem of the Canadian Olympic Team, enters into circulation today.

“Canadians from coast to coast can wish our athletes luck by keeping special coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, including the 2008 Lucky Loonie,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

“The Mint has provided each member of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams competing in Beijing with a Lucky Loonie as their own personal good luck charm and through the launch of the coin, Canadians also have an opportunity to own a piece of the Olympic dream.”

Annual Set Includes Four Presidential $1 Coins and the Final Five Coins in the 50 State Quarters® Program

WASHINGTON - Twenty-eight satin-finished coins, in beautiful packaging, priced at $22.95.  Who could ask for more?  Customers can purchase the 2008 United States Mint Uncirculated Set beginning July 30, 2008, at noon Eastern Time.

The 2008 United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set is composed of two folders of 14 coins bearing the “P” and “D” mint marks of the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver.  Each folder includes uncirculated versions of the four Presidential $1 Coins honoring James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren; the final five commemorative quarter-dollar coins in the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters® Program, honoring Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii; and the Lincoln cent (penny), Jefferson 5-cent coin (nickel), Roosevelt dime, Kennedy half-dollar, and Golden Dollar featuring Sacagawea. ANA Announces Results of Convention Survey

ANA members favored Baltimore and Chicago as potential convention sites in an e-mail survey distributed July 3 by the American Numismatic Association.

The survey, conducted by the ANA as a result of dealer and member feedback regarding the selection of convention sites, was spearheaded by the ANA Convention Committee, chaired by Carl Schwenker, and prepared by ANA staff.

The survey, which was emailed to active, paid members, measured attitudes about convention site selection, criteria for site locations and the components of conventions that contribute to the overall show experience.

United States Mint To Display Real Gold Bars and The Most Beautiful Coin Ever

The United States Mint has chosen the Nation’s largest coin show in Baltimore, Md. this summer to provide a Golden Moment for visitors, unveiling the much-anticipated 2009 United States Mint Ultra High Relief Gold Coin-a modern version of what many call the most beautiful gold piece ever created - the Double Eagle.  The exhibit at the United States Mint booth will show the development of this modern masterpiece-from its origin as gold bars-through test strikes-to the finished, one-ounce 24-karat (.9999 pure) 2009 United States Mint Ultra High Relief Gold Coin.

2008 American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coins Now Available

Final Coin in Three-Year Series Honors Judicial Branch of United States Government

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint began accepting orders for the 2008 American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coins on July 1, at 12:00 noon (ET). There is no household limit for these options.

The 2008 coin’s reverse features the final design in the three-year series entitled, “The Foundations of American Democracy.” This final design honors the Judicial branch of the United States Government. The image depicts a rendition of Lady Justice, a classic symbol dating back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The scales, suspended from a finger of her right hand, represent the delicate balance of the law. A sword, held in her left hand, represents the power of reason, which can be wielded in either direction. 2008 Uncirculated Presidential $1 Coin Set Available July 24 - US Mint

Washington - The United States Mint announced today that sets containing uncirculated versions of the second year of coins in the Presidential $1 Coin Program will be available beginning 12 noon (ET) on July 24, 2008. The 2008 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set-containing coins honoring James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren-will be offered at $15.95.

The Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set is composed of eight coins - four each from the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver. A protective, rotatable blister encases each coin, allowing full visibility of the edge-incused inscriptions. The coins are displayed in an attractive folder that includes biographical sketches, quotes and portraits of each President.

ANA Resolves Litigation with Nebel, Former Employees

The pending litigation between the American Numismatic Association and John Nebel and former employees Susie Nulty, Lawrence Lee, Ph. D. and Wayne Abraham has been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties, Executive Director Larry Shepherd announced today.

The resolution followed several meetings between the ANA and John Nebel in which the ANA agreed to dismiss all claims against Nebel, Nulty, Lee and Abraham.

Jim Licaretz Receives 2008 ANA Numismatic Art Award for Excellence

Philadelphia artist Jim Licaretz is the 2008 recipient of the American Numismatic Association’s Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture. He will accept the honor on Aug. 2 at the ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Baltimore.

A medallic artist at the U.S. Mint since 2006, Licaretz was a sculptor/engraver there from 1986 to 1989. He spent a year with The Franklin Mint and was a master sculptor for Mattel, Inc. for five years.

In between, he taught life modeling and figure sculpture at Philadelphia’s Fleischer Art Memorial, and was a member of the faculty at Otis-Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles (1992-94) and Academy of Art University in San Francisco (1995-2000).

United States Mint Unveils Design for First U.S. Coin with Readable Braille

WASHINGTON - United States Mint Director Ed Moy unveiled the design for the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar at the National Federation of the Blind’s annual convention in Dallas, Texas, during the March for Independence on July 2, 2008.

“The United States Mint is proud to present the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar coin design. It will be the first coin ever minted in the history of our country to contain readable Braille characters,” said Director Moy. “I am looking forward to presenting the design for this unprecedented coin, and I am pleased that the United States Mint is playing a role in the cause of bringing literacy to all blind and visually impaired Americans.”
