For those who have not heard, the US Mint released the list of the 56 sites chosen to be part of the new America the Beautiful Quarters Program. As the program is scheduled to run for twelve years, and as a site from each state is going to be featured, quite a bit of media attention was given to the announcement on both the national and the local level.
The America the Beautiful Quarters Program will feature 56 new quarter dollars issued at a rate of five per year starting in 2010 and going until 2021. The obverse (heads side) of these quarters will still show a portrait of George Washington, but the reverse (tails side) will feature a changing design emblematic of a national park or other national site. One location from each state, the District of Columbia and the United States territories (Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) will be represented.
With sites chosen throughout the country, local public interest was definitely higher than for typical US Mint press about a new program. We have taken the opportunity to gather some of the more pertinent media coverage for you to explore.
The first section displays national news while the second offers localized news from specific states and territories.
