2012 Silver Proof Set
The top three sellers in the United States Mint weekly product sales figures were made of silver. The spotlight belonged to the new 2012 Silver Proof Set first and then to the 2012 San Francisco Proof Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set.
Opening sales for the 2012 Silver Proof Set hit 189,628 in the first seven days. It was released on Monday, June 4. Last year’s launch, however, was much better with 209,367 orders in six days, but the annual set was also released earlier in the year and not during a summer month.
Perhaps stealing some of the thunder for the 2012 Silver Proof Set was the second best seller.
The 2012-S Proof Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set received quite a bit of fanfare before its debut. At first the idea of the set was well received because it was something from the San Francisco mint facility, but later it was criticized for its $149.95 price tag. Still, when it launched on June 7, collectors scooped up 85,341 before 3 PM ET the next day. By Monday, 115,059 had been purchased. Since the U.S. Mint is giving the public a daily update on the number of orders, it should be noted that as of Wednesday, June 13, an approximate total of 125,371 had been claimed.
Remarkably, the third best selling item was the older, individual 2012 Proof Silver Eagle from West Point. It hit the market in April and costs $59.95 each, but 27,301 were picked up in this round following the 9,527 that were ordered in the prior round.
Also making a comeback were the bullion American Eagles. More than one million Silver Eagles sold since the prior report and more than 17,000 of the one ounce and 5,000 of the one-tenth ounce Gold Eagles sold. The new 2012 total for the Silver Eagles moved to 15,655,500 while the one ounce Gold Eagle climbed to 247,500.
