Buying activity was calmer in the most recent U.S. Mint sales report. Fewer numismatic products exceeded their prior weekly gains, 28 versus 34 in the last round, including the popular 2012 Proof Set and 2012-W Silver Eagle proof coin.
2012 Proof Set
Climbing by 13,415 new orders, this year’s Proof Set was the clear front runner for the week. Its previous gains, however, were more than 21K and 32K earlier in the month. With the latest rally, 458,038 sets have sold between its release on May 7, 2012 and July 23, 2012.
Next, the closest top seller was the 2012 Mint Set. Collectors picked up 6,180. They too advanced by less, following leaps that were over 8K and 14K in past rounds.
2012-W Silver Eagle proof coins, which had surging sales before they were suspended for re-pricing during the week ending July 15, lost some sales. Their total fell by 44 to 492,745 due to cancellations and returns.
As of today though, the United States Mint ended the Silver Eagles’ suspension and began offering them at a slightly lower price, $54.95. Getting the coin for $5 less should spark more interest and push their coin sales beyond the 500K milestone very soon. Upcoming releases that include Silver Eagles should help as well.

The first three columns of the table provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The last column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, July 23. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, July 25.
