Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set
Two new products joined the U.S. Mint’s lineup of numismatic offerings, but neither could beat the popularity of the 2012 Proof Set. The 2012-P El Yunque Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin opened on Tuesday, May 29, while the Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set started on Friday, June 1.
This year’s Proof Set earned 13,241 in sales during its third full week on the market and nearly reached 300K overall. Its total came to 299,584.
The second and third top earners were the 2012 US Mint Uncirculated Set with a gain of 10,668 and the 2012 Proof Silver Eagle with an increase of 9,527. It should be noted that the Silver Eagles topped 400K in this report, hitting 404,985 in sales.
As for the debuting items, they came in fourth and fifth place. The Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set, featuring one proof coin and memorablia for $53.95, received 9,430 orders over the weekend. The El Yunque silver uncirculated coin, composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver and costing $204.95 each, had 6,514 orders during its six day start. Its inauguaral sales were the lowest in its series, trailing behind the Chickasaw coin that started at 8,658 in February and Vicksburg that began with 7,861 in January.
A bullion version of the five ounce El Yunque coin is also new to the sales chart below. The U.S. Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers have bought 6,200 since the their release at the end of May. The main competition, though, has been the bullion Silver Eagle. 240,000 were purchased since last Thursday. Other gainers were the one ounce Gold Eagles, which rose by 3,000, and the Gold Buffalos, who advanced by 1,000.

The first three columns of the table provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, June 4, 2012. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, June 6.
