U.S. Mint sales for the 2012 Proof Buffalo Gold Coin opened at 4,110

Opening sales numbers for the 2012 Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin and the inaugural 2012 Birth Set were released Tuesday by the United States Mint. These two new items, however, did not appear to stir any kind of buying frenzy among collectors for other Mint products.

The 2012 Proof Buffalo Gold Coin’s debut resulted in 4,110 orders between its launch on March 15 and March 19, and it stayed true to the trend of slower starts in the series that may be attributed to its continuous rise in price due to its gold value. This year’s opening price was $1,960. Last year’s issue started at 5,782 orders and had an initial price of $1,760.

Also new to the sales table was the 2012 Birth Set. Its first appearance was semi-bright with 5,670 sales since its release on March 13. The Birth Set placed third among the week’s best sellers with only the two silver proof commemoratives faring better. Given the nature of the Birth Set, its sales pace going forward could be a bit more uncertain than other products.

Collectors scooped up another 15,597 of the Star-Spangled Banner Proof Silver Dollars and 6,563 more of the Infantry Soldier Proof Silver Dollars. The Star-Spangled Banner coins have been on the market since March 5, and the Infantry Soldier Silver Dollars have been around since February 16.

In all, just 24 products improved over their prior weekly sales gains, compared to the 48 who out-performed in the previous report. Most of the recent overachievers were the America the Beautiful Quarter products such as the Three-Coin Sets and the quarters’ bags and rolls.

The first three columns of the table provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, March 19, 2012.

Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Tuesday, March 20, except for the five ounce bullion coins.
