2012 Eagles, Garfield Presidential Dollar Coin Covers Top US Mint Sales Chart

US Mint sales of the James Garfield Presidential Dollar Coin Cover debuted a bit weaker than previous issues in the series

2012 sales of Silver Eagle bullion coins ferociously jumped out of the starting gate with one of the best starts in the coin’s history, and for the collectible products, the James Garfield Presidential Dollar Cover debuted at the top of this week’s best sellers.

The 2012 American Silver Eagle bullion coins launched on January 3. The U.S. Mint does not sell these coins directly to the public as they do the proof and uncirculated versions. Instead, the Mint sells the investment-quality bullion Eagles to a network of Authorized Purchasers. On the first day of availability, they ordered 3,197,000 and then added another 175,000 on Wednesday. Hence, more sold in two days than the entire month of December, which ended with 2,009,000 in sales.

Sales for the 2011 James Garfield Presidential Dollar Cover started December 29, and by January 3, its inaugural total reached 13,843. As a comparison, however, the Garfield launch did not start with such a bang as the three prior 2011 releases in the series, as indicated in the table below.

2011 Presidential $1 Coin Cover Debut Sales

Wrapping up the year were the six 2010 annual sets that went off sale on Friday, December 30, 2011. The sets contained either the five debuting quarters in the first year of the America the Beautiful Quarters program, or they contained the Abraham Lincoln Presidential $1 coin. Below is a list of those products, starting with the most sold.

One more item also joined the "No Longer Available" category recently. It was the 2011 American Gold Eagle One-Quarter Ounce Proof Coin. Its last reported sales were 10,381 and were not updated in the most current figures. Originally, the U.S. Mint published a product limit for the single coin as 16,000, but this was not the first time the Mint has prematurely halted sales of a proof Gold Eagle. The same unexpected end of sales occurred with the 2010-dated issues.
