The United States Mint this week released images of the 2010 Presidential $1 Dollar Coins. Before now, only images of line art designs were available for this year's coins which continue the series depicting former American Presidents.
The newest dollars in the US Mint Presidential $1 Coin Program honor Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan and Abraham Lincoln and will have respective circulating launch dates of February 18, May 20, August 19 and November 18.
The Presidential Coin Act of 2005 (the law authorizing the coins) dictates that the program shall run until all eligible individuals have been honored. The act does require, however, that no coin shall be struck for any living person and that if a former President should pass away during the program, a coin may not be issued until at least two years after his death. Accordingly, this program is scheduled to run at least until 2016.
The 2010 coins mark the thirteenth through the sixteenth to be issued in the dollar series, now in year four, which began in 2007 with George Washington.
"Each of the Presidential $1 Coins is a tribute to the men who made tremendous personal sacrifices to lead our country," US Mint Director Ed Moy stated in a media release about the designs.
The dollars include a portrait of the featured President on the obverse (shown above) and an image of the Statue of Liberty on the reverse. The reverse was designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart and includes the inscriptions "$1" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
On the edge of each coin are the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "2010," the mint mark and 13 stars.
